KnowBe4 vs Proofpoint: Which Security Awareness Platform Wins?
KnowBe4 and Proofpoint Security Awareness are the two names that appear on almost every enterprise shortlist, and the choice between them usually comes down to one question that has nothing to do with training. Do you already run Proofpoint for email security? If you do, Proofpoint’s awareness product inherits threat intelligence that KnowBe4 cannot replicate. If you do not, KnowBe4’s standalone breadth and simulation tooling generally wins.
This comparison is vendor-neutral. We build interactive security awareness training and compete with both platforms, so we have stated where each one genuinely beats the other rather than steering every section toward a third option.
Quick comparison (TL;DR)
Section titled “Quick comparison (TL;DR)”| Dimension | KnowBe4 | Proofpoint Security Awareness |
|---|---|---|
| Founded / origin | 2010, standalone awareness vendor | Awareness arm of a broader email security platform |
| Content library | ModStore, thousands of modules, 35+ languages | Video modules and assessments, narrower catalogue |
| Phishing simulation | PhishER, PhishFlip, Smart Delivery, large template library | Campaigns targeted using TAP threat intelligence |
| Threat intelligence | Vendor-agnostic, no email gateway of its own | Real attacks aimed at your organization feed simulations |
| SCORM export | Supported, but the console is the primary delivery path | Limited, platform-first |
| Deployment model | Standalone, works alongside any email stack | Strongest when bundled with Proofpoint email security |
| Pricing | Roughly $1.50 to $3.25 per user per month, public reviews | Custom, frequently bundled into a suite contract |
| Best for | Teams wanting the deepest library and simulation tooling | Teams already standardized on Proofpoint email security |
Where Proofpoint genuinely wins
Section titled “Where Proofpoint genuinely wins”The differentiator is threat intelligence, and it is a real one. Proofpoint runs the email gateway, so its awareness product knows which attacks actually reached your employees. Targeted Attack Protection data can shape simulations around the campaigns aimed at your organization this quarter rather than a generic template library.
That closes a gap most awareness programs never close. Training built on last year’s phishing patterns teaches employees to spot attacks nobody is sending them anymore. Proofpoint can point simulations at the lures your people are receiving now.
The second advantage is procurement arithmetic. If Proofpoint already holds the email security contract, adding awareness is a line item rather than a new vendor, a new security review, and a new DPA. For large organizations that friction is worth real money.
Where KnowBe4 genuinely wins
Section titled “Where KnowBe4 genuinely wins”Library depth is not close. The ModStore runs into thousands of modules, videos, games, newsletters, and posters across 35 or more languages. Proofpoint’s catalogue is narrower and more compliance-shaped. If your program needs breadth across topics and languages, KnowBe4 is the stronger content buy.
Simulation tooling is also more mature. PhishER for inbox-level triage, PhishFlip for turning reported phish into simulations, and Smart Delivery for bypassing filters are operational tools built over a decade. Proofpoint’s campaign platform is capable, but KnowBe4 has more surface area for teams that run phishing as the center of the program.
The third advantage is independence. KnowBe4 does not care whose email gateway you run. Organizations on Microsoft Defender, Mimecast, or Google Workspace get the full product. Proofpoint’s awareness value drops noticeably when you are not on its email stack, because the threat intelligence advantage disappears and you are left with a narrower library at enterprise pricing.
The lock-in question
Section titled “The lock-in question”Buying awareness training from your email security vendor is a coupling decision, and it deserves an explicit conversation rather than a default.
The coupling pays off while you stay on Proofpoint. It costs you on the way out. Switching email security providers means either losing the threat-intelligence advantage that justified the awareness purchase, or renegotiating two products at once from a weaker position.
KnowBe4 carries the opposite trade. You manage a separate vendor and a separate console, but the training decision stays independent of the email decision. Teams that value optionality usually price that independence higher than the bundle discount.
Content style and completion
Section titled “Content style and completion”Public reviews on G2 flag a consistent complaint about both platforms: the content reads as committee-written. Employees complete it because it is assigned, not because it holds them.
KnowBe4 partially answers this with volume. With thousands of modules you can find a style that fits your workforce, including the narrative series that reviewers rate well. Proofpoint answers it less directly, because the catalogue is smaller and shaped more by compliance requirements than by engagement design.
Neither platform is built around active practice. Both ask employees to watch and answer questions. If low completion rates or weak retention is the problem you are actually trying to solve, that shared limitation matters more than the differences between them.
SCORM, LTI, and your LMS of record
Section titled “SCORM, LTI, and your LMS of record”Organizations with an established LMS need to know whether training content travels.
KnowBe4 supports SCORM export, but the product is built around its own console and the export path is not where the engineering attention goes. Proofpoint’s SCORM support is more limited still, and the platform expects to be the delivery surface.
Neither vendor documents an LTI 1.3 launch with automatic grade passback. If your requirement is that awareness content lands inside Cornerstone, Workday Learning, SuccessFactors, Moodle, or Canvas as a first-class citizen, both of these platforms will push back, and that requirement should be raised in the first call rather than discovered during implementation. Our LMS integration guide covers what full portability looks like.
Pricing
Section titled “Pricing”KnowBe4 publishes tiered pricing (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond) with a quote calculator. Public reviews and procurement writeups put the effective range at roughly $1.50 to $3.25 per user per month on annual contracts, with discounts at higher seat counts.
Proofpoint runs custom enterprise pricing and rarely quotes awareness in isolation. The number you see usually reflects a suite negotiation, which makes direct per-seat comparison unreliable. Ask for the standalone awareness price even if you intend to bundle, so you know what the bundle is actually discounting.
For the wider category picture, our security awareness training pricing guide breaks down what each band buys.
Which should you choose?
Section titled “Which should you choose?”Choose Proofpoint if Proofpoint already runs your email security, if you want simulations shaped by the attacks actually hitting your organization, and if consolidating vendors carries weight in your procurement process.
Choose KnowBe4 if you run a different email stack, if content breadth and language coverage matter, if phishing simulation tooling is the center of your program, or if you want the training decision to stay independent of the email decision.
Choose neither if the problem you are solving is that employees complete training and still fall for attacks. Both platforms are watch-and-answer systems. Active-practice vendors, EU-native vendors, and adaptive HRM vendors all address that differently, and the security awareness platform comparison hub scores fifteen of them on the same seven dimensions.
Where RansomLeak fits
Section titled “Where RansomLeak fits”We are a third option rather than a tiebreaker between these two, and we are not the right pick for everyone reading this.
RansomLeak is built around interactive scenarios where employees make decisions and see consequences, rather than watching a video and answering questions afterward. The AI threat catalogue covers OWASP LLM Top 10 risks, prompt injection, and deepfake voice attacks in depth that both platforms treat lightly. SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and an LTI 1.3 launch are first-class, so content runs inside your existing LMS.
Where we do not compete: KnowBe4’s template library and PhishER triage tooling are more mature than ours, and we have no email gateway, so we cannot offer Proofpoint’s threat-intelligence targeting. If those are your deciding factors, buy accordingly.
The full exercise catalogue runs free without an account, so you can compare the training itself against whatever your employees sat through last quarter before booking a single call.
